Catalina

Well, I am back!

I did a short sprint triathlon this weekend, and it was of mixed success.  It was out on Catalina Island.  It was fun.  We, some friends and I, went out on my friends Ben's parents boat.  The triathlon was Saturday and featured about 600 competitors.  The swim was 1/2 mile, the bike was 9 mile, and the run was three mile.  As the name implies this is a short distance so you basically need to go all out for the whole time.  My finish time in this triathlon was 1 hour zero minutes, and zero seconds  That was good enough for tenth place overall, and 3rd place in my age group.  I also was fast enough this time to not get beat by any girls.  Unfortunately I was unable to beat my friend Ben, also my nemesis in triathlons.  He remains undefeated against me and his win streak rose to four.

The triathlon this year was kind of poorly setup, however due to a road closure on the island.  Because of the road closure all the bikers had to do three laps up and back a hill.  This was bad because it meant you had to dodge people going both ways.  This is particularly bad for me as my strong area is the bike.  Oh well.  The run was good, but I just didn't have it in me to keep up.

Next time I will be working much harder on the run as I would like to get my minutes per mile below 6:45 in a race this distance.

The offseason starts for me now though and I think I won't be doing any tris till next year, however runs and rides are fair game.

All right as promised here is my triathlon participation up to this point in the year.  The first tri of the year was Ironman California.  It was real exciting because it was the first tri of the year.  It was held in Oceanside California and it was really cold.  The water temp in the harbor was in the mid 50"s, and at the start of the race it was raining, which is not as sweet as it seems.  The swim was easy.  It is a 1.2 mile swim (this is a half ironman distance triathlon) and I completed it  in 30 minutes and 25 seconds.  Also I  only got a cold headache right in the beginning of the swim so the rest of the way was painless.   Unfortunately the cold water took a serious toll on my feet, like and idiot I didn't wear booties, and  if felt like I had  hunks ice attached to my legs where my feet should have been.  Good times.  This is where the pain really began, however, the boat ramp that they had us run up felt like, with my frozen feet, that it was made of broken glass, and misplaced single legos.  Running on this with bare feet is NOT a good thing.  Also the way they had us run was LONG.  It felt like forever,  I eventually did make it to my bike though, then I took off my wetsuit, put on wet socks, remember the rain, and ran out of the transition area.  Time in T1 =  5 minutes 30 seconds.

Check back later for my bike excursion.

I have very recently (today) made this into a triathlon blog to  keep the world updated on my triathlon musings, trainings, and competitions.  What makes me entitled to do this.  Well obviously the fact that I enjoy competing in triathlons, and in addition the fact that I have a  blog.

In that spirit, over the next couple of days I will give a recap of my year in triathlons, then begin to talk about how my traing is progressing now.

I will also say that I have no professional experiance at any of the stuff I write, unless I write about engineering then oh boy do I, but rather I like to think I know what I am talking about.
